New online casinos open every month, and most of them look professional at first glance. Telling a safe, licensed casino from a risky one takes about ten minutes if you know where to look. Use this 10-point checklist before you register or deposit anywhere.
1. A valid gambling licence
Scroll to the footer. A legitimate casino shows its licence number and the regulator's name, for example the UK Gambling Commission, the Malta Gaming Authority or the national regulator in your country. Click the licence badge: it should lead to the regulator's own website, where you can search for the operator. If the badge is just an image with no link, or the number cannot be found on the regulator's site, walk away.
2. It is legal in your country
Many countries only allow casinos licensed locally. Check that the casino accepts players from your country and holds the licence required there. Playing on an unlicensed site means you have little protection if something goes wrong.
3. Clear company details
The terms and conditions should name the company that runs the casino and its registered address. Anonymous operators are a red flag.
4. Secure connection and account protection
The site should load over HTTPS (padlock in the address bar) on every page, and ideally offer two-factor authentication for your account.
5. Fair, readable bonus terms
Wagering, max bet, max cashout and expiry should be easy to find and easy to understand. If the terms are vague or contradictory, the casino can use them against you later. Our guide to casino bonus terms explains what to look for.
6. Known payment methods and clear withdrawal rules
Look for familiar options such as cards, bank transfer and well-known e-wallets. The casino should state withdrawal limits, processing times and any fees up front. Read more in our guide to safe deposits and withdrawals and our list of fast payout casinos.
7. Games from recognised providers
Reputable casinos use established game studios whose games are independently tested. Each slot should show its RTP in the game info. If you see copies of famous games from unknown studios, be careful. See live dealer vs RNG for how game fairness works.
8. Responsible gambling tools
Deposit limits, session reminders, time-outs and self-exclusion should be available from your account settings, not only on request. Licensed casinos are usually required to offer them.
9. Real, reachable support
Test the live chat or email before you deposit. Ask a simple question, for example how long withdrawals take. A quick, clear answer is a good sign; no answer, or a vague one, is not.
10. Player feedback over time
Look at independent complaint forums and review sites. Every casino gets some complaints; what matters is whether there is a pattern, especially about unpaid withdrawals or closed accounts, and how the casino responds.
Quick red flags
- No licence information, or a licence that cannot be verified
- Bonuses that look too good to be true (for example 500% with no visible terms)
- Pressure to deposit again before a withdrawal is processed
- Withdrawal "fees" or "taxes" you must pay first
- Support that disappears once you ask for a payout

Stay in control
Even at the safest casino, the house has an edge. Treat gambling as paid entertainment, set a budget and a time limit before you start, and never chase losses. Online gambling is for adults only (18+, or the legal age in your country). Visit our responsible gambling page for help and support.
