Casino bonuses come in many shapes: matched deposits, free spins, cashback, reloads and loyalty rewards. Each one works differently, suits a different type of player and hides its real value in the terms. This guide is the starting point for everything spin4bonus covers on bonuses. It gives you a short overview of each bonus type, the terms that decide what an offer is worth, and links to our detailed guides on every topic.
How casino bonuses work
A casino bonus is extra play value, such as bonus money or free spins, given in exchange for registering, depositing or playing. It is a marketing cost for the casino, and it is protected by conditions. The most important one is the wagering requirement: you must bet a set amount before bonus winnings can be withdrawn. Other common conditions include a maximum bet, a maximum cashout, game restrictions and an expiry date.
The key idea is simple: a bonus extends your play, it does not remove the house edge. Over time, the casino still has a mathematical advantage. A fair bonus can give you more entertainment for the same budget; it cannot turn gambling into a source of income.
Welcome bonuses
The welcome bonus is the offer for new players, usually a match on your first deposit, such as 100% up to a set amount, sometimes spread over several deposits and paired with free spins. It is often the biggest offer a casino makes, but also the one with the most conditions. Our welcome bonus guide shows how to calculate the real value with a worked wagering example.
No deposit bonuses
A no deposit bonus gives you free spins or a small bonus balance just for signing up. It is a good way to test a casino without risking your own money, but expect strict wagering, a low maximum cashout and short expiry dates. Read our no deposit bonus guide, and if you are deciding between the two main types, see no deposit bonus vs deposit bonus.
Free spins
Free spins are rounds on a named slot at a fixed stake, offered alone, as part of a welcome package or as a no deposit reward. Their value depends on the stake per spin, the slot's RTP and the wagering on winnings. Some offers are wager-free, which makes them more valuable even if there are fewer spins. Find out more in our guide to free spins offers.
Reload bonuses
Reload bonuses are deposit offers for existing players, often weekly or tied to events. They are usually smaller than welcome bonuses, typically a 25%–50% match, but can come with lighter terms. Compare them in reload bonuses vs welcome bonuses.
Cashback
Cashback returns a percentage of your net losses over a period, often in the range of 5%–20%, and is frequently paid with low or no wagering. It suits players who prefer table or live games, where deposit bonuses rarely work well. It reduces losses but does not prevent them. See cashback casinos explained.
VIP and loyalty programmes
Loyalty schemes reward regular play with points, tiers and perks such as personal cashback, faster withdrawals or higher limits. They can add value if you already play regularly, but should never encourage you to bet more than planned. Read our comparison of VIP and loyalty programmes.

The terms that decide a bonus's value
Whatever the bonus type, the same handful of terms decide what it is really worth:
- Wagering requirement: how many times you must bet, and whether it applies to the bonus only or to deposit plus bonus. Start with our beginner's guide to wagering.
- Max bet, max cashout and game weighting: the rules most often responsible for lost winnings. All three are explained in casino bonus terms explained.
- RTP of eligible games: a higher RTP lowers the expected cost of clearing wagering. See slot RTP explained.
- Expiry and sticky or non-sticky status: how long you have, and whether the bonus can ever be withdrawn.

Choosing where to claim a bonus
A generous bonus is worthless at an unsafe casino. Before claiming anything, confirm the casino is licensed and legal where you live, has clear terms and offers responsible gambling tools. Our safe casino checklist takes about ten minutes, and our casinos section is a good place to start your research.
Getting paid: deposits and withdrawals
Your payment method can affect both your bonus and your payout. Some casinos exclude certain e-wallets or prepaid methods from offers, and withdrawal speeds vary widely. Compare options in our casino payment methods guide, and read more about e-wallet casinos, fast payout casinos and crypto casinos.
A quick bonus checklist
- Is the casino licensed and legal in your country?
- Were you going to deposit anyway, and is the amount within your budget?
- What is the wagering, and does it apply to the bonus or to deposit plus bonus?
- What are the max bet, max cashout and expiry?
- Do the games you enjoy count towards wagering?
- Does your payment method qualify?
If you cannot answer all six easily, skip the offer. Playing without a bonus is always an option, and it means you can withdraw whenever you like.
